Venice

Venice, located in the north-eastern part of the Adriatic Sea, is an extraordinary place. Its origins date back to the times of the Barbarian invasions, when the population of the hinterland found a unique and safe refuge in the lagoon. This privileged position favoured its development and independence, letting Venice become a city-state with an impressive naval and trade power that allowed it to dominate commercial activities in the Mediterranean.

Since 982, when Pietro Marcello signed the deed for the sale of the San Giorgio Island, the history of the Marcello family – one of the oldest settlers in the lagoon – is inextricably linked to the history of Venice and its domains. Warlords, men of art, baylos in Constantinople, Doge Nicolò, procurers, musicians and many other illustrious personalities have contributed over the course of a millennium to the city’s grandiosity. The family still live here, animated by an unchanged love for their land.
